WIC helps moms and kids eat. But finding what you need isn’t always easy

By KENYA HUNTER (AP Health Writer)Bianca Williams was tired of trying to find a store that either accepted federal food benefits for low-income mothers and their children or a store that had quality produce. So the Milwaukee resident — who has seven kids, including two currently being breastfed — decided in November that she’d rather turn to frozen Thanksgiving leftovers and food from family and friends. But it’s not always easy to get the fresh produce, baby formula and other nutritious WIC-approved items. Williams’ closest Walmart shuttered in 2016. Since then, she said, WIC can be “too much of a hassle.”“Sometimes, to be honest, I don’t even use it,” said Williams, who makes about $7 too much a month to qualify for food stamps, “because it’s so hard to get to and f...

For many Peloton users, the point of the program is to exercise in the comfort of your own home sans judgment from others. That wasn't exactly the case for Christopher Nolan. The British filmmaker had an uncomfortable moment during a class when the instructor slammed one of his films over three years ago. Nolan revealed the story while accepting the Best Director award for his film "Oppenheimer" at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards gala. “I was on my Peloton. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!'” Nolan told the crowd. “When (film critic) Rex Reed takes a s--t on your film he doesn’t ask you to work out!"While Nolan didn't call out the exact Peloton instructor, fans on social media brought back a clip of cyclist instructor Jenn Sherman who talked about his film "Tenant" in 2020 starring David Washington and Robert Pattison. “Survey says” looks at various rankings and scorecards judging geographic locations while noting these grades are best seen as a mix of artful interpretation and data.Buzz: California’s housing costs – compared with other states – were at a seven-year low in 2022.Source: My trusty spreadsheet looked at a curious cost-of-living yardstick – the federal government’s annual “price parity” report that puts key consumer expenses into a national perspective between the 50 states and the District of Columbia. We focused on the recently released data for 2002 and compared those stats with the last time California had a better housing cost number (2015). ToplineCalifornia housing costs ran 60% above the US norm in 2022, by this math. Three men charged in Tuan Le murder case Paulsen began sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14 in 1995 and did so "for years," according to prosecutors. He would commit the crimes when no one else was present and often in a vehicle where he could ensure that the girl could not escape. The victim came forward as an adult with their accusations and Paulsen admitted to them with detectives from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. He was arrested in December 2022. The three criminal counts against Paulsen all count as "strikes" under the state's Three Strikes Law, which can increase mandatory prison sentences for people convicted of violent or serious felonies. On Feb. 13, a judge will give Paulse...
