Illinois enacts mandatory paid leave 'for any reason'

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois will become one of three states to require employers to offer paid time off for any reason after Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a law on Monday that will take effect next year.Starting Jan. 1, Illinois employers must offer workers paid time off based on hours worked, with no need to explain the reason for their absence as long as they provide notice in accordance with reasonable employer standards.Just Maine and Nevada mandate earned paid time time off and allot employees the freedom to decide how to use it, but Illinois’ law is further reaching, unencumbered by limits based on business size. Similarly structured regulations that require employers to offer paid sick leave exist in 14 states and Washington, D.C., but workers can only use that for health-related reasons.Illinois employees will accrue one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked up to 40 hours total, although the employer may offer more. Employees can start using the time once they have worked fo...

Kiszla vs. Gabriel: Should the Broncos spend big on a running back in free agency?

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:30:57 GMT

Kiz: At the risk of irking Jim Brown or Emmitt Smith, conventional wisdom now states the best way for an NFL team to get in trouble is to overspend on a running back. Yes, running backs are a dime a dozen. And break easily. But I wouldn’t bet on Javonte Williams recovering from his knee injury to be anywhere near 100% when the Broncos open the season, and Denver needs to take a large chunk of the offensive burden off quarterback Russell Wilson. So what should the Broncos do at running back in free agency?Gabriel: They’re going to have to do something, I think that much is safe to say. In fact, George Paton said it himself at the NFL Combine earlier this month. What that looks like, though, is indeed an interesting question. One natural fit is Latavius Murray, given that he was apparently texting Sean Payton about coming to Denver before Nathaniel Hackett was even fired. The free agent crop could have been absolutely loaded, but diluted predictably in the last week with Saquon ...
